Carnival fever - 2009

Here's one they made earlier

By Anna Bartlett – BBC Radio Northampton

With the good weather we've been having of late, you'll be forgiven for getting in the summer spirit a few months early! But that's exactly what one group in Wellingborough has been doing, in preparation for the town's 101st Carnival.

Wellingborough Afro-Caribbean Association has been given funding by Wellingborough Borough Council to form a Carnival Club to design and create costumes for this year's event, and they hope that the flamboyant and bright costumes will provide an international feel to the event.

Catherine Fraser from the Association says in the past the town carnival has been more of a parade - but with their Caribbean influences they hope to encourage a party atmosphere.

"We want to bring in the cultural aspect of the Carnival, because Wellingborough has got a wide community of different ethnicities.  We're using bright colours - reds and yellows - so we look really flamboyant, and when we're coming down the street people will see us from miles around."

The Carnival Club have been making their own head dresses and costumes for the carnival.  They meet twice a week at Rock Street in Wellingborough, and have been having costume and craft lessons from Julie Moreton of Lottery-funded carnival arts group, Festive Road.

Julie says its really important for communities to get involved in their town's carnival. "Carnivals really bring everyone together; it's fun and really celebratory. It's a tradition that waned for a while, but it came back with Trinidad-style carnivals and this group will definitely bring that kind of atmosphere to Wellingborough!"

Sue Bull, Events & Promotions Manager for the Borough Council of Wellingborough says “The Carnival Club is open to everyone not just members of WACA.  Anyone interested in Carnival and costume design should contact Catherine on 07825 686561 to find out more”.
